My two least favourite disseminators of disinformation – Nigel Farage and Andrew Wigmore – are at it again, this time promoting coronavirus conspiracies on Twitter
Newsweek magazine published a clickbaitish overheated headline reading “The controversial Wuhan lab experiments that may have started the coronavirus pandemic”.
In the actual story, we learn the US Defence Intelligence Agency released a January assessment saying that the “outbreak probably occurred naturally”. Now they’ve updated the assessment to say there’s a “possibility” the virus was released “accidentally” by a Wuhan lab, due to “unsafe laboratory practices”.
It’s worth noting that between the release of the initial report and the new revision, Trump appointed Richard Grenell, a loyalist, to head the agency.
Both Farage and Wigmore have promoted the story, with Farage calling China to allow independent investigators into the country.
Why Newsweek has gone rogue is anyone’s guess.
