Counting COVID-19

People compare the performance of different countries

  • Rather than counting cases, People look to death tolls as a better method, due to lack of testing

  • Official death tolls still undercount the real number

  • Stanford University released a “pre-print” without peer review study, found that 50 to 85 times more people have been infected with the virus than official figures show

  • More than 15% of coronavirus deaths taking place outside hospital, says ONS

  • Many countries only count those who die in hospital (including the UK?)

  • The Economist says the best way to count is to look at “excess mortality”: to compare actual deaths against the statistical average number of deaths expected

  • The Economist thinks the US death toll is about 140% of what has been reported
